Tork research shows people want to thank washroom cleaning staff but rarely do
10.09.2026
Data from Tork, a global leader in professional hygiene and an Essity brand, reveals a clear appreciation gap: the majority (56%) of washroom users surveyed by Tork agreed that cleaning is hard work and that cleaning teams deserve more recognition for their efforts.1
“Tork data shows that 38% of cleaners surveyed have left their jobs due to lack of recognition and burnout, factors that are unrelated to pay and which contribute to recruitment and retention challenges across the cleaning industry,”2 said Jenny Logenius, Global Brand Manager, Professional Hygiene at Essity. “However, many washroom users wish they could thank cleaners for the job they do. Tork is proud to join the growing list of global organisations celebrating these professionals who play a critical role in creating hygienic, comfortable, and safe spaces.”
The business impact of cleaners
Of the people surveyed, 4 in 5 said hygiene issues in the washroom make them feel worse about an entire business. In fact, many avoid a venue or business due to issues with hygiene or privacy.1 Poor washroom experiences may lead customers to take action, creating potential consequences for business reputation and revenue.2
Thanking cleaners today and every day
“The survey shows that people are more likely to interact with cleaning teams in their workplace than in a public facility washroom, like a train station, and that’s likely because there is some familiarity or routine,” Jenny continued. “However, we’re asking everyone to start small and the next time they’re in the same space as a cleaner, to share a simple message thanking them for their important work. Small acts can make a big difference.”
